Interview Q&A

Describe a time when things got hectic. How did you handle it?

My main job, especially over the summer, is babysitting for multiple families. Things can definitely get hectic when watching young kids or multiple kids at one time. For instance, I watch this family with 3 kids, the youngest is 6 months and the oldest being 7. One time, when I was preparing a bottle for the baby and getting him ready to eat the girls started arguing over who had to clean up what. There was a lot of screaming and crying involved. I first got them to stop screaming while calming the baby down in my arms. Then I assigned them each a few things to pick up to make it as fair as possible and asked them to stop crying because it was all okay. After a minute or two everyone had stopped crying and the baby was ready to be fed.

Would you call yourself a team player?

Yes, I would consider myself a team player because I am great at working well with others to achieve a common goal. I displayed and will continue to display this through my time as a soccer player for the Michigan Jaguars and Detroit City FC Women's Semi-professional team. I am very good at communicating with multiple people and taking all their ideas into consideration to solve a problem. Although team work may be different in the workforce compared to on the field I will be able to adjust my thinking to fit my environment.

What are your greatest strengths?

My greatest strengths are: that I work very well with others, am good at taking care of people/children, and I thrive under pressure. I have found that these are very important in jobs like babysitting and hopefully into nursing. I babysit a lot and know that these are key strengths to have, especially when watching little kids or babies. These are good to have in the field of nursing because they work with many other nurses and doctors, work with patients non-stop, and need to be quick on their feet when a problem arises. Nurses also need to know how to calmly take care of a situation or solve the problem when one quickly arises and chaos occurs. I discovered these strengths throughout my time as a babysitter and as a player of a high level soccer team for many years.

Why do you want to become a nurse?

I want to become a nurse because it it a faster paced job that requires you to be on your feet all day. I am looking for a job that doesn't require you to sit at a desk all the time and works under pressure or experiences intense situations. I love the medical field and helping care for others, so I think this is the perfect job for me. I have spent a lot of time babysitting in which I am on my feet almost all day running around taking care of young kids and I love it.

What qualities do you have that make up for your lack of experience?

Some good qualities that I have that make up for my lack of previous work experience is that, I am very good with people. I spent a lot of time babysitting when I was growing up and learned at in early age how to communicate with adults/parents in a kind manor . I also work well with children and help them as needed. I am good at taking care of people since that's basically what babysitting is and I also have had to help take care of siblings or family members when ill. I am very kind and love to work in high intensity situations, I thrive in "emergency" situations because I work well under pressure. These are all good qualities to have when becoming a nurse that help make up for my lack of experience as a nurse. I am a hands on person who is a quick learner which I gained from playing soccer for so many years.

Why do you want to work here?

I want to work here because I have done some research and talked to some current employees who have expressed that it is a great work environment. I adore the staff and the work you do here is amazing. I am looking for a hospital that meets all the patients needs with little to no complaints that pays their staff well and I have heard that this is the perfect place for that. I have seen the facilities and would love to get to work in them. Overall, it is a great working environment with great staff and pay for all of the great work that is done here and I want that.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.

I am currently 18 years old and have many babysitting jobs in the past. I have also done other side jobs for people, but no set job beside watching certain families on a regular basis. I picked up babysitting because  a lot of family friends have young kids and I could never get a "real job" due to sports. I played competitive club soccer all throughout my childhood into college and played football for 2 years in highschool. I love watching and taking care of kids including babies. I have watched 8 kids at one time before and frequently watch a family with 4 kids. I do well in school and have maintained a 3.7 or higher all throughout high school. I  stay on top of my work and have very good time management skills which I learned from having to manage school, babysitting, soccer, and football when in season. I am looking to become a nurse and am excited to see where this career path takes me.

What are you passionate about?

I am very passionate about soccer because it has taken me a long way and taught me so many life lessons. I am also passionate about health and fitness because I love working out and treating my body right in a healthy way that makes me happy. I have had bad relationships with food in the past and have learned over time to better that relationship and become fit in a healthy way. I am also passionate about living life like theres no tomorrow because nothing is guaranteed and I realized that my sophomore year of high school when a good friend, and teammate of mine, passed away un-expectedly. I love learning and growing as a person, colleague, leader, friend, etc.

How do you handle a stressful situation?

Often times things get stressful either at home when I have a lot to do or when I am babysitting and things get chaotic. When I am at home and have a lot do, I typically make a list of things I need to do and then begin completing them one by one and cross them off as I go. I try to take breaks in between and decompress when I am done by relaxing, working out, or small crafts to take my mind off things. When it comes to stressful situations in babysitting, I take deep breaths and get control of the situation by talking smoothly and calming the kids down. I try to distract them with things to do while cleaning up or doing other things and then we do a fun activity after. Soccer practice or working out are huge stress relievers for me because I am a big fitness person.

How do you define success?

I define success as fulfilling my role as a coworker and properly taking care of patients or others. It means to do nearly everything right and sometimes going above and beyond for others who need it. As a potential nurse I think of success as helping a patient heal correctly, informing them, and being a good friend and coworker to my fellow peers. I plan to treat all patients with great care and to be understanding of all situations no matter what. also, to provide them with all the help that I can.
